Medusa, one of the three gorgons of Greek mythology whose snake-hair turned everyone to stone was killed by Perseus with the help of a clever trick: He escaped "Medusa's trap" [--> Le piège de Méduse] using his brass shield as a mirror wherein he could see her picture and thus beheaded her. It is not of little importance to note that Satie's title actually refers to a certain Count Méduse who was not on very good terms with Satie - and vice versa. The comments from the score can therefore be read in a twofold way. The term "le singe" can mean "monkey" just as well as "old bastard"...
